English as a Second Language program

The skills shortage is a very real threat for South Australian businesses. Many organisations bring in skilled migrants to ease the shortfall.  If the first language of your staff is not English, however, there may be some communication difficulties.

mosaic communication provides English as a Second Language programs for migrant staff – as well as support for managers and supervisors – for a smoother workplace transition.

How the program works

Before tuiton commences, an assessment is made of the language ability of potential students in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, and a report is prepared, generally for the staff member’s manager.

The assessment, including analysis and written report, is the starting point for the program.

Needs-based tuition

Tuition is usually delivered on a one-to-one basis at the student's workplace, and is targeted to each student’s particular areas of need.  The program consists of one or two sessions per weeks over 10 weeks.  Each session is 1 or 2 hours duration.

The program consists of targeted reading, writing, speaking and listening acitvities. Grammar is not taught in a stand-alone way, rather, it is an integrated, specific and active part of learning.

Students are taught to notice language and language use. The program encourages them to think like native English speakers, and to become  more automatic use of English.  Students are expected to access other English learning aids, like the internet and, if necessary, extra English classes outside the workplace.

Progress can be accurately measured through the use of cloze (gap fill) activities and journal writing.

Costs

Initial assessment, including analysis and written report is $225.

Tuition is $95 per hour, and included preparation, delivery and reporting on student progress.

A one-off administration fee of $100 is also charged to cover miscellaneous items.
